My pc is being destroyed by a virus right now, and there's a high probability I won't be able to use it for a couple of months or something.

Sorry, but I'm leaving it up to you.

Gee, thanks.

As for the virus problem, have you tried using anti-virus software to remove the virus or infected files? The last resort, and apparently my only, option is to dump the whole hard-drive and recover it.

Ok, here's what I know. The virus itself is pretending to be an anti-virus program.

I can't open ANYTHING unless I tell it what to open it with. It blocks Add/Remove Programs and Task Manager.

It keeps opening Internet Explorer to porn and sexual help sites, and is generally making me VERY pissed off.

I've scoured my C drive, and deleted anything I don't trust, and it wouldn't let me delete a few files.

I have nothing except a few pictures on this PC. I download everything to a memory stick and store it on my laptop and my 1TB external drive, so I won't lose anything.

Shit, that's what happened to my netbook prior to dumping my hard-drive a third time and recovering it (I have dumped it 4 times thus far).

Sounds exactly what happened to me, except it also infected my Windows Player and virtually every other thing on my desktop and Start menu.

That problem also sounds familiar. I think they still have instructions as to how to get rid of those ads, but if they're taking you to porn sites, then that sounds really bad.

If it's not allowing you to delete those files, then those are the infected files or where the virus is residing.

Well, since you downloaded everything to your memory stick you won't be at a loss if you have to resort to dumping your hard-drive and recovering it.

He doesn't have his sysem disk, so recovery/formatting isn't an option, unfortunately.

I have my I386 folder, which I was told is basically what's on the disk.

I just deleted a shitload of unfamiliar stuff, and now it's toned down.

Well that sucks that you can't find your disc, that may be your only chance of getting rid of the problem altogether (replacing the PC seems to work as well, but I know Toutaku is not going to spend another $800-1500 PC (don't know how much that is in British pound).

Unfortunately, what I learned is that when you delete a shitload of unfamiliar stuff, it's usually vital files that have been corrupted by the virus.

Oh, you have that? That might save us some trouble.

You may be able to boot the recovery/reinstall suff from that if you boot the computer in safe mode.

Well, if the folder says anything about a system recovery program, you better go find that disc.

Safe Mode would work; for me, I had to shut down my netbook improperly, turn it on, wait for the prompt screen to show up, then I'm supposed to press a certain key to start the recovery program (it was F9 in my case).

I've restart it three times, and I can't see the prompt to press f2, to open setup.

How else would I start in safe mode?

try pressing f2 (if you're sure that's the command) anyway. repeatedly. before the prompt even should come up, like just as it's starting up. You might get lucky.

Done that twice...

It's stopped for now. Looks that all the time I spent deleting unfamiliar files was well spent.

Oh, well that's good.

As for the safe mode not working, you sure you got the right setup menu command?
